SUNY CORTLAND GOSPEL CHOIR 2008 SPRING CONCERT
The SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir presents its 21st Annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 4, 4:00 p.m. in Old Main Brown Auditorium. A reception in the Old Main Mezzanine will follow the concert. SUNY Cortland alumna and Cortland native Christine Johnson Sinclair is the featured guest artist. Sinclair is an international gospel artist and former Gospel Choir member. The Gospel Choir welcomes the Cortland community to this very popular event. Families with children and seniors are also welcome. Old Main is wheelchair accessible. Tickets for the event are $2 students, $4 faculty, staff and seniors and $5 general admission. Free tickets are available on a need basis. Proceeds support the Gospel Choir Scholarship and Programming Fund. SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum will extend the "Welcome" on behalf of the college. Marie Agen, Catholic Campus Minister, will extend the invocation. The Gospel Choir program consists of contemporary and traditional gospel selections and jazz. The Gospel Choir Ensemble will present a jazz set.
The Gospel Choir will present much of the program from it 2008 Toronto and Niagara Falls tour. These selections will include audience favorites: "Perfect Praise," by Richard Smallwood, with Sulema Iriarte, "Faithful Is Our God," by Hezekiah Walker, "The Best Is Yet To Come, by Donald Lawrence. Additional selections will include "Calling My Name," with Rose Graham as soloist, "Spirit and Truth," by Bishop Eddie Long, "Rain On Us," by John P. Kee, and "He Will Supply."
The Gospel Choir will join with Christine Sinclair for two selections, "For Every Mountain," by Kurt Carr, and "Order My Steps," by Glenn Burleigh. Sinclair will also favor the audience with her ever popular rendition of "Amazing Grace." The Gospel Choir Jazz Ensemble will perform "Spring." The group is comprised of Reggie Siegler, bass guitar, Andy Rudy, keyboard, Rob Brown, trombone, Jamie Yaman, tenor saxophone and Benjamin Terry, percussion.
The Gospel Choir, which is comprised of college, high school and community members, has been recognized for its outstanding performances at the National Collegiate Gospel Competition. Last year it made its first international tour to England where it presented concerts in Brixton and London. Most recently, it toured Toronto, Canada and Niagara Falls, NY. The Toronto concert was presented at the First Baptist Church of Toronto, which was founded in 1826 by fugitive slaves from the United States.
Directing Cortland's Gospel Choir will be Robert Brown, a SUNY Cortland adjunct instructor in Africana Studies. Brown teaches music at Blodgett Elementary School in Syracuse. He is also music director of the New Life Community Church. Choir musicians are Andy Rudy, Reginald Siegler, and Benjamin Terry are from Syracuse. Jamie Yaman is from Cortland.
Concluding their year as officers are Cynthia Echefu, president, a biology major from Bronx, NY, Paula Gooden, vice president, biomedical science major from Queens Village, NY, Elizabeth Alarcon, secretary, Childhood and Early Childhood Education major from Bellerose, NY, Michelle Loomis, treasurer, early childhood education major from Hamburg, NY. Tour manager this year is Mark Santiago, a sophomore physical education major from Albertson, NY. Dot Thomas from Cortland, NY continues to serve as Alumni Officer.
